Ad Infinitum

Biography

Ad Infinitum is a name used by several unrelated musical projects.

1. Ad Infinitum (stylised AD IИFINITUM) is a Swiss symphonic metal band that began as a solo project by Swiss singer Melissa Bonny before evolving into a full band with drummer Niklas Müller, bassist Jonas Asplind and guitarist Adrian Theßenvitz. The project started in 2018 when Bonny released the debut single "I Am the Storm", which featured guest musicians including former Delain guitarist Timo Somers, alongside a crowdfunding campaign to finance an upcoming album. Following the campaign, the project expanded in 2019 into a full band formation and signed with Napalm Records.

The band released its debut album, "Chapter I: Monarchy", in April 2020, preceded by the singles "Marching on Versailles", "See You in Hell" and "Live Before You Die". Later in 2020, an acoustic version of the album titled "Chapter I Revisited" was released digitally. In December 2020, Jonas Asplind left the band due to health issues and was replaced by Korbinian Benedict on bass, after which the band continued work on new material. The second studio album, "Chapter II: Legacy", was released in October 2021 and was preceded by the single "Unstoppable". The third album, "Chapter III: Downfall", was announced in 2022 and released in March 2023, with "Upside Down" as its lead single. In 2024, the band released its fourth studio album, "Abyss".

2. Ad Infinitum is a space black metal project from Appalachia, Kentucky, founded in 2013 by J.G.S. The project released its debut album, "Woven Within", in February 2014.

3. Ad Infinitum was a progressive rock project led by keyboardist Todd Braverman, formerly associated with Cathedral. The project released a self-titled album, "Ad Infinitum", in 1998, which was inspired by 1970s progressive rock bands such as Genesis and Yes. The lineup included Mike "Goose" Seguso (vocals), Todd Braverman (keyboards and guitars), Craig Wall (guitars), Ilan Goldman (keyboards and vocals), Dave Beers (bass), and Don DiPaolo (drums). Additionally, a separate collaboration between Peter Hook of New Order and Stockholm Monsters was also released under the name Ad Infinitum, producing a one-off 7-inch single titled "Telstar", backed with "Telstar in a Piano Bar", released in March 1984.

4. Ad Infinitum was an Austrian black metal band that released a demo in 2002.

5. Ad Infinitum were an English musical group associated with the Factory Records label. The project was formed by Lindsay Reade, who was married to Factory Records manager Tony Wilson at the time. The group included members of A Certain Ratio and New Order bassist Peter Hook.

In 1984, Ad Infinitum recorded their only single, a cover of Joe Meek’s "Telstar", with the B-side "Telstar in a Piano Bar". The release initially featured lyrics written by Reade, but these were rejected by the publisher of Joe Meek’s estate and replaced with more abstract vocal elements. In the final production, Peter Hook remixed the track and processed Reade’s vocals through a vocoder, making the lyrics largely unintelligible.

The name Ad Infinitum was reportedly inspired by a phrase written by Tony Wilson on an envelope. The single was also notable for its packaging, which included an early use of holographic imagery on a record sleeve depicting a spaceship.
